The new Evo 4.4 Wharfedale has grown from the extensive research and the development that the Elysian produced flag smell speakers and lends a large part of the technology that comes to watch at Elysian.
The primary focus is on the AMT development that results in a radically different way to efficiently and accurately reproduce high-frequency detail. Similar cabinet technology such as Elysian offers a stable and solid foundation for driver units with radiation edges to help integrate the driver output with space acoustics. In addition, the unique SLPP base reflex system, as developed for Elysian, is now included in EVO 4.

The EVO4 series
The EVO4 series is located between the Wharfedales Award-winning Diamond 11 series and our future flagship, the Elysian speakers. This series has been developed next to the Elysian project and comes from the same extensive research and development. With characteristics that are rarely seen on products on this price, such as the significant, well-built cupboards, the beautifully curved sides and the refined driver arrangement.
EVO4's AMT high-frequency unit produces sound in a completely different way than conventional dome testers. The ribbon technology uses a large, pleated, lightweight diaphragm, driven by a series of magnets. This is an extremely efficient and accurate method to create high-frequency sound, so that the EVO4 series has an open and smooth sounding top, without being too bright and hard.
This AMT Linttweeter is linked to a fast, responsive and detailed umbrella middle toner. These soft fabric dome is equipped with an extensive damping, venting and a specially designed back room, so that the driver can sound incredibly detailed, with a wide spread so that you can hear the music as meant, wherever you are. This midrange driver can be found on all speakers within the EVO4 range, with the exception of the EVO-4.1.
Low frequencies are treated by Wharfedales low-deformation motor system, coupled to woven kevlar cones to deliver powerful bass that you can hear as well as feel. This strong, lightweight Kevlar makes the driver both quickly and powerful, which ensures accurate and deadly bass that can be impressively low and loud when needed.
The bass extension of the EVO4 is then expanded and improved by the most advanced version of the Wharfedales Signature Slot-Loaded Bassport so far. The SLPP or Slot Loaded Profiled Port is designed to extend the bass performance of the speakers using a carefully designed port in the speaker's basis, making the evo4 speakers a lot of forgiving people with their placement, where most speakers would struggle With the bass outlet, the EVO4s will still shine.
The building quality of the EVO 4.4 is good for the price. We love the way the elegant curved cupboard has been put together. It is strategically reinforced and muted to provide a solid, low resonance platform from which the drive units can work. There are three finishing options - black, white and walnut.
There is an air motion transformer tweeter.
An AMT works with a light, pleated diaphragm that is driven over the surface by a row of carefully placed magnets. The pleats shrink or set out according to the music signal, where the air is pressed between the pleats to create the sound wave. The sound of these types of devices is claimed to be fast due to the light aperture, and accurate because of the entire surface that is powered.
The 55 x 80 mm AMT hands over a unusual drive unit, a dome agrange, on a relatively high 4.7 kHz. Little speakers use a dome medium due to the costs and difficulty of development, but the speaker used in the 4.4 has a 50 mm soft dome with a damping composition to control the resonances. There is also a specially shaped room behind the dome that sprinkles and absorbs the rear sound of the membrane, which reduces distortion and the detail is improved.
This Dome Midrange Unit has a wide frequency response from 800Hz to 5KHz. This response together with the powerful motor system helps integration with the AMT tweeter and the double woven Kevlar bass drivers that are on the front panel. The separation point between the middle range and woofers is 1.2 kHz.
If you think every speaker that is 106 cm high and has double 15 cm bass drivers, should deliver sufficient bass, you are right.
The output of these two woofers is assisted by a downwardly directed gate setup whereby the low-frequency sound through a gap between the base of the speaker cabinet and the floor platter.
These floor residents prove that Wharfedale has the ability to mix it with the very best at higher prices. The EVO 4.4s are entertaining and detailed with enough refinement to make them an excellent long-term choice. If you are looking for flooring at this level, these are the speakers you are looking for.
